About this calculator
This calculator is designed to provide clear, easy-to-understand results. Enter your values, review the results, and calculate again whenever you need to.
What are factors?
A positive factor of an integer divides it evenly, with no remainder. Factors are useful for simplifying fractions, identifying prime numbers, finding common factors and solving problems involving equal groups.
How to find factor pairs
Test whole-number divisors starting at 1. Whenever a divisor divides the number exactly, pair it with the quotient. For example, the positive factor pairs of 12 are 1 ร 12, 2 ร 6 and 3 ร 4. You can stop checking once the trial divisor is larger than its paired quotient.
Factors and multiples are different
A factor divides a number, while a multiple is the result of multiplying a number by an integer. For example, 3 is a factor of 12, and 12, 24 and 36 are multiples of 12. Use the least common multiple calculator when you need to compare multiples of two numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What is a factor of a number?
A positive factor divides a whole number exactly, leaving no remainder. For example, 1, 2, 3 and 6 are factors of 6.
How do factor pairs work?
Multiply the two numbers in a pair to get the original number. For example, 2 ร 6 and 3 ร 4 are factor pairs of 12.
